Make the drive to The Basil Leaf – LaGrange, GA

May 7, 2009

My second visit to The Basil Leaf in downtown LaGrange, Georgia may have been slightly better than the first. If you’ve been there and tried it, you’ll realize what a statement that is. Saddled in the revitalized area of Main Street, The Basil Leaf is in a great spot, and doesn’t disappoint with their size-able, yet reasonable menu.

My fist visit I tried the southern crab cake sandwich after ignoring the advice of our host to sample the BLT. This was as close to real crab meat as you’ll find this far inland and very tasty indeed. I could drink the sweet tea from a trough or bucket it is that sweet, and that good.

This most recent visit I was stuck between the roast beef and blue cheese sandwich or the aforementioned BLT. Our waittress immediately said the BLT and I relented. I’m glad I did. For less than $10, you get a side salad, sandwich and a side of pasta salad. Throw in the sweet tea with lemon, a 15% tip and you walk out well under $15.

The BLT, for those who don’t know, is a nice twist on a classic. You get a generous portion of fried green tomatoes, applewood smoked bacon, lettuce and a wonderful spicy mayo nicely placed between buttered and lightly grilled bread. The only thing I could find wrong was the pasta salad was a bit heavy on the dressing for my personal taste, but you would never know by the empty plate our server whisked away. Again, the sweet tea was phenominal and this time I decided to take it intraveinously.

Joe will definitely plan a visit to LaGrange, planned around meals at The Basil Leaf. Joe will also schedule plenty of bio-breaks for the drive back to Auburn after drinking all the sweet tea in the place.
