SEC 11-1, Joe Auburn 12-0

September 8, 2009

That’s right folks, Joe rolled a perfect prediction record on the opening weekend of SEC play. Joe picked OSU to beat Georgia on the road – the lone SEC losing team for the weekend.

On to more exciting news – the Auburn Tigers cruised through the second half Saturday night to beat the Louisiana Tech Bulldogs in the season and home opener. Joe doesn’t have much to say that hasn’t already been said, but that has never stopped me in the past.

Auburn offense. Aside from Blake and Benton not seeing much action it was hard to be too critical. Todd looked sharp – did you see the pump fake and then the corner of the end zone fade?! – and in control of the offense. Kodi ran well and I was glad to see him score and I’m sure Jerry shed a tear of joy too. Poor Ben Tate who has laboured long and hard for four years gets upended by the Freshman sensation McCalebb. By the way, does anyone know the last time two Auburn backs both rushed for over 100 yards in a game?

Auburn Defense. I was concerned during the first half but was thrilled to see them adjust and lock down on the Bulldogs in the second. The biggest area of concern here overall was it appeared the starters played the ENTIRE game. Maybe Joe was fooling himself believing all the “lack of depth” talk was just trash?

Auburn Special Teams. What’s not to love about Byrum’s field goals? Our kick coverage could have been a little better, but then again we were facing last year’s number one returner. Mario looked confused on punt returns, and since then, Coach Chizik has said the race is wide open again. Ugh.

Overall, Auburn fans have a lot to celebrate, but Mississippi State comes to town with their own set of “new-ness” this weekend. From what I have read, the Maroon Bulldogs started sluggish and sloppy before stomping all over Jackson State. While Auburn isn’t a Jackson State, I think it is safe to say we need our Tigers to learn and correct plenty of mistakes before Saturday evening. The early read is another Auburn victory, but check back on Friday for the full rundown.
