Is Tubs striking ND gold?

December 2, 2009

The following nugget is sure to raise more than a few eyebrows and should provide some decent chatter around the offices in the region. Attributable to the rapidly growing

Notre Dame: FootballScoop is hearing that an assistant coach in the SEC was asking coaches last night if they thought he should go with Tommy Tuberville to Notre Dame if Tubs got the head coaching job in South Bend.  This makes us wonder if Tuberville has his agent, Jimmy Sexton, in contact with Notre Dame athletic director Jack Swarbrick.  Our source tell us Tubs has several coaches already in mind for his next job, a plan that could very well include Texas running backs coach Major Applewhite as his offensive coordinator.  We hear Tuberville was very complimentary of Georgia Tech head coach Paul Johnson in a radio interview yesterday, and thought Notre Dame might be wise to go after Johnson.  You wouldn’t think the former Auburn head coach would make those comments if he was very interested in the Notre Dame job….or is Tubs playing the cards just right?

Auburn fans knew Coach Tuberville would land somewhere, although I personally didn’t think it would be anything near this high-profile. I always thought Texas A&M or Virginia would come calling, and Tubs would gladly take the call and carefully review the offer. I don’t see Tubs as a good fit culturally for Notre Dame and I don’t know how much winning he could do having to recruit nationally.

Let’s see where this takes our former coach and in the meantime, wish him and his family all the best!

I think Tubbs is smarter than given credit for. He did seem lazy at the end of the Auburn years, especially with recruiting. I think his loyalty to his little clan of assistants and problems with Auburn upper management gradually ate away at his motivation. With new batch of assistants and the huge amount of money Notre Dame would give him access too, he’d be able to put together an amazing staff….he could bring in some amazing recruiting classes at Notre Dame…there is no doubt he would have a one of the best defenses in the nation in a couple years and his schedule would be easier than anything he ever had at Auburn or Ole Miss. He may also pop up at GT if Johnson gets hired away.
